“Let Down your Hair”

Today I had an epiphany while listening to a song on the radio. The chorus went something like this:

“Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.”

All the talk about letting your hair down, where would anyone’s mind go? The same place that mine went, Rapunzel and her luscious locks. Suddenly, in the middle of the road, I was struck by this revelation. The first time I had read Rapunzel (Or my Mom read it to me) should be when I was about 4 years old. Since then to the present day, Rapunzel was just a tale about a princess with abnormally long hair locked up in a tower till her prince finds her.

Today I realized what it meant when he said “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!”

Rapunzel was just a girl who had become uptight because of living with a hag of a strict ‘mother’ who never let her go out. The Prince, who can be substituted by a modern day boyfriend, actually just made her a cut loose a little, showed her a good time and that’s when she ‘Saw the Light’.

I don’t know if the term ‘let your hair down’ comes from this story or the story was inspired by the term. Whatever it may be, I’m just so pleasantly surprised because I realized this ;)!
